Icelandic FinMin running for world peace

Icelandic Minister of Finance, Steingrimur J. Sigfusson and the famous Kenyan runner Tegla Loroupe will lead the last leg of the World Harmony Run in Iceland today.

The World Harmony Run is part of the UN and UNESCO’s International Year of Youth.

The last leg of the run is leaving the Valur stadium in Reykjavik at 11.30 GMT this morning and Steingrimur J. Sigfusson and Tegla Loroupe will run alongside Valur supporters ant the 20 Freedom Runners, who come from 13 different countries.

The runners will go to Hringbraut and over the pedestrian bridge to Njardargata. From there they will progress to Frikirkjuvegur and on to Laekjargata; ending at the Idno theatre and City Hall.

Eva Einarsdottir, the Reykjavik City councillor for sports and recreation will welcome the runners at 12.00 at the pond-side between Idno and City Hall. The closing ceremony will take place there if weather allows. Otherwise it will be moved indoors.

At the closing ceremony representatives of the Harmony Run will thank the finance minister and Tegla Loroupe for their support of peace in the world and present them with prizes for being “Torch bearers of peace”.

The World Harmony Run is a co-ordinated run through over 100 countries. Runners carry a symbolic flaming torch, like the Olympic torch. The runners in Iceland have traversed the country.
